Defeating the ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ Factor!

I’ve been based in NYC a while now and I think a lot about the ‘Carrie Bradshaw Factor’.

There is an increasing trend of individuals in the 23-34 age group (women especially), that are flocking to the city in hopes of the fantasy life of posh evenings out, gorgeous men and unique job opportunities.  Instead, they are finding themselves broke, single and feeling ‘stuck in the city’. I also had fallen into that trap and found myself unhappy, frustrated and overweight.  Given such, it’s important to find ways you can incorporate the city life you’re craving, without having to settle, feel added pressure or let down.  Follow these fast and simple tips to amplify your city chic experience!

Date a human, not a fantasy!

Let go of some of the high standards set for the perfect partner.  It’s a lot of pressure to put on the other person on a first date! This is the time to relax and have fun. Be open to the possibilities and remember that often times you don’t always know what’s best for you. You might be surprised and find more than what you thought you were looking for!  Or at best, make a great new friend.

No one talks about all those late night liquid calories!

The more fun and colorful a cocktail, the more chance of racking up the pounds. Limit yourself to just one of these drinks when out on the town. Sip slowly and actually savor it. Switch to a cleaner drink, such as vodka club and alternate water in between cocktails. Also, remember why you are out! Develop a relationship with the friends you are with and potentially meeting new people, not a love affair with a daiquiri.

Become a confident, fearless go getter!

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking people are watching your every move. Realize that what others think of you is none of your business. Follow your gut instinct and see it through. You have to live with your decisions and it allows you to develop a better relationship with yourself. You come across as more poised and self-reliant, which will attract more positive experiences and people into your world.

How to Stand Out in your New City!

It’s time for another episode of New You City Chat!  This week, I discuss the challenges you may encounter when relocating and what you can do to off set them.

Why now is NOT the best time to book your next guilt trip!

This week the concept of guilt has been on my mind.  It’s so interesting the tangled web we weave from a situation where guilt has affected us in some way.  It drives us mad; with its projections of self-doubt, regret, shame, and disappointment just to name a few.

Does this ever happen to you?  Do you find yourself going crazy reliving a situation in your head, hoping it had gone differently?  Do you feel like you ruined your reputation from a mistake you’ve made?

I know how easy it is to get caught in this trap and that’s why this week’s episode of “New You City Chat” is an expose on guilt!  I discuss what guilt is, how it affects us, and what you can do about it going forward.

 

Remember that guilt is just an aspect of our lives, not a reflection of it.  Things happen, however with a sense of forgiveness and selflessness, we can move ahead.

We tend to bring our focus so heavily on what other people think of us, that it’s driving us away from our own wants, desires and establishing our true purpose in life. We start to worry about pleasing them as oppose to ourselves!

What happens is that this creates a unique sense of fear and our mind in turn starts to play tricks on us. Instead of thinking about what we WANT to do, we concentrate on what we SHOULD do. And we’re “shoulding” ourselves all over the place!

Practice BEFORE You Preach! How to Bounce Back After a Setback.

With my radio show on the Life Coach Radio Network now in full swing every 1st and 3rd Tuesday evening of the month (insert non-shameless plug), I was feeling on top of my game.  The buzz surrounding my coaching business was growing and I was ecstatic.  I felt like nothing could bring me down.

Backtrack to last Tuesday evening, when it was time to start my live taping of the next radio show.  It went great; I was feeling confident, having fun and really feeling like I was getting the hang of it.  Sure, no one was calling in and the chat room seemed desolate, but I wasn’t going to let that get to my head.  I wrapped up at the end of the hour and went to shut down the online recording studio.  That’s when I saw the mute button in all its bright red glory and the color drained from my face.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

This couldn’t be happening, I thought.  Not ME.  I reached out to some of my listeners that confirmed what I already knew to be true.  The whole hour was one long dead silence.  I was disappointed, embarrassed and heartbroken.  I had put so much time and energy into the show and felt like I had nothing to show for it.  And then the worst thoughts crept into my mind, what would everyone think of me?  Would they see me as careless, less valid or worse, lose interest entirely?

This then brings me to what had been the title of the show, “What Other People Think of You is None of Your Business!”  HA!  Clearly my new frame of mind was not channeling anything I just spoke about that last hour.  I acknowledged this, decided I was okay with that and let myself be upset for the day.  I knew I would laugh at all of this eventually; I just definitely wasn’t there yet.  In the meantime, I was dramatic and fermented over my “misfortune”.

After my one day grace period, I re-visited my material and realized that these so called “mistakes” are what shape my practice and my ability to help other people.  These experiential moments of life are what make me relatable and able to have the advantage of knowing exactly what you are going through.  It reminded me that I too go through my own challenges and my efforts to move through it are where I find the resources to give you the inner strength to improve in your own life.

Moral of the story?  I too need to practice BEFORE I can advise others of what I preach!

I’ll be doing a second take of the subject matter for my next radio show on Tuesday, August 6th at 8p.m. EST.  I’m really thrilled to share the new insights I’ve gained and how I didn’t let what I felt to be the assumptions of others from my mishap get to me.  No matter what circumstances or difficulties you may be going through, there is a way to channel out the negative thoughts that are evoked from the outside world.  I’ll discuss the ways you can do this to start seeing results as soon as the next morning!

The universe pulled a fast one on me and now I can see why.  I understand why it needed to happen and I can also laugh at what I had thought to be such a catastrophe at the time.

Revealed: How Other People’s Thoughts Hold You Back!

Hope you have been enjoying your summer!  If you’re in the city like me, how crazy has this heat been??  As much as I love a good sweat in the sun, I’ve been showing up to most gatherings looking more “ewwy” than delightfully dewy…

Some people may scoff silently in their minds at my disheveled appearance or massive pit stains (hey, it happens to the best of us!).  They may even derive a sense of pleasure at how much better they may look in these situations.  And while it took me a loooonngggg time to get here, I can honestly say “I REALLY DON’T CARE!”

How is that even possible, you ask?  For me, it came to a point where I was just simply burnt out.  I was constantly concerned about being judged and I tried to carefully calculate my moves so that they would please other people.  I was always agonizing over what I should wear, if people noticed I gained five pounds, or why I was stuck in a career that had nothing to do with my major.  As I continued on this lifestyle, the unhappier I got.  So once I finally learned how to remove myself from that world of worry, I realized that I’m the one who gets to make the decisions and that really, what other people thought of me was none of my business!

Are You Living Up To Your Potential?

This past weekend I had the opportunity to lead the Life Coach Chat on Blogtalkradio.  I had a BLAST!  The emphasis was on what potential and purpose really mean.  As a society I often find that we set ourselves up for failure.  We have these ideas of what our potential or purpose in life should be.  But something doesn’t quite feel right.  We tend to put pressure on trying to figure out what it is quickly and then judge ourselves relentlessly to see if we are measuring up to where we need to be or not.

So then the question is, “Where does this need come from and is it really important?”

Our society has created this “timeline” that has been implemented in our minds since birth.  We all know the drill; do well in school, get a good job, buy a nice home, get married, have kids, save for retirement, etc… It’s the all American dream so to speak.  But what if we don’t fall neatly into that structure?  Does that mean something is wrong with us?  Do we then continue to push ourselves into something that isn’t working?

My Crush on Deepak Chopra & How You Can Benefit! Learn the Simple Way to Maximize Your Mind-Body Connection.

The past few days I’ve been blessed with some knockout ‘in the present’ moments! 

First was Electric Daisy Carnival, a festival where the waves of music and the beat filled my body.  I danced for hours upon end and just let myself be captivated by the people around me and the sky above with all its vast possibilities.  I felt aligned and in connected to my truth. 

The second was the Super Soul Sunday feature on Maya Angelou.  Her ability to overcome so many hardships and stay eternally grateful blows me away.  She broke down into tears when she expressed the following:

“It humbles me that this force, that made leaves and fleas and stars, rivers… and you… loves me.  It’s amazing!  I can do anything and do it well.  It’s why I am who I am.”

My heart sang to her and I couldn’t help the tears of amazement that came in return.  Knowing that this higher strength believes and supports in me (and YOU!) brings everything I could ask in this moment.

Lastly, I had the opportunity to see Sanjiv and Deepak Chopra discuss their book collaboration, Brotherhood.  Can I just say that Deepak is a total rock star?  From his collarless blazer and jeans to his sleek specs and effortless gray hair, he looked astonishing.  I hadn’t felt this giddy since my days of getting the latest Teen Bop with Leonardo DiCaprio on the cover.

He and his brother (also a Doctor and medical professor at Harvard), talked of growing up in India, the struggles of coming to the U.S. and their different views on Western and Complementary medicine.  The overwhelming theme of the evening was what could happen with determination and the ability of knowing you are capable.  Deepak expressed that the biggest lesson he learned in this regard was to stop feeding off the approval of others.  When you are taking a risk, there are many people that may not approve and simply for that reason.  By pushing through anyway, you may discover something inherently valuable that no one would’ve seen and further benefit society. Feeding off this energy was Sanjiv, who suggested that daring to dream may create some short term discomfort, while playing it safe creates nothing.

At the end of the evening, a request was made for Deepak to lead the group in a guided meditation.  It was a simple 2 minute exercise; however those brief moments filled me with such peace and clarity.  I invite you to benefit and replicate what I was able to practice.  Below is the same meditation, transcribed to the best of my ability:

Start with a good, solid seat.  Close your eyes.  Simply Breathe.

Keep your attention on the breath.  Ask yourself – “Who am I?”  Stay steady on your breath, allowing whatever images or feelings come to mind.

Next, feel your heart and ask yourself – “What do I feel?”

Go back to the breath.  Now ask, “What do I want?”

Allow your mind to settle into your breath. “What is my purpose?” 

Ask – “What is my passion and how can I serve?”  Remember to focus on the initial feelings.  Do not look for the answers as they are deep within your soul.

Let whatever is happening in the moment swirl through your mind a few moments longer. 

Open your eyes.

You need not have meditation experience to do this, just a few moments and an openness to try.  Give yourself time between each question.  Notice if your mind and body start to come together.  This brief session is an amazing way to get to know yourself a little better or just set a more positive tone to start out your day.  You may even want to journal or jot down a few of the thoughts or emotions that came up for you.

We often spend so much time re-hashing the past and beating ourselves over what we should’ve done differently.  And if we aren’t doing that, we are creating anxieties over what is going to happen tomorrow.  The thing is that we don’t know what will happen.  The beauty in that is you are given a choice.  You can focus on what may potentially go wrong or you can put an emphasis on trusting that you have everything you need to tackle the future.  This type of thinking can bring more satisfaction and calmness NOW, so that you can have clarity and resourcefulness for what lies ahead.
